Tristar Inc. Reviews the Greatest Scottish Inventions

April is Scottish-American Heritage Month, and to celebrate, Tristar Products is here to review the greatest inventions of all time from the Scottish.

TV: That’s right. That television you use every day was invented by an engineer of Scottish descent. John Logie Baird was born in Helensburgh, Dumbarton, and he would go on to invent the first TV in 1926. He was the first person who could get a TV to transmit a recognizable image. He also was involved in the development of another invention we’ll discuss later in this blog.

Telephone: Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was born in Edinburgh and actually invented the telephone without actually trying to. He was trying to invent a device that would transmit sound for deaf people, but the telephone was born from his mistrials. Bell is also responsible for several other Scottish inventions such as the phonograph, hydrofoils, and the iron lung.

Penicillin: Born in Ayrshire, Alexander Fleming is credited as the scientist who founded Penicillin, the basis for all anti-biotics we have today. He was heavily involved in the medical research for bacteria and antiseptics, and while he was working on cures for the flu virus in 1928 he stumbled up the antibiotic Penicillin, which quickly became not only important in Scotland, but internationally as well.

Radar: Radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging) is the other Scottish invention that John Logie Baird was involved with. He helped Sir Robert Alexander Watson-Watt develop the concept, and together they revolutionized warfare during WWII. Watson-Watt was born in Brechin, Angus, and was the son of scientist and inventor James Watt. Watson-Watt was a physicist and meteorologist, which made him the ideal person for this invention. The idea of RADAR had existed before Watson-Watt’s discovery, however, no one had yet developed a working system for using it. That was until Watson-Watt came along and changed the game. He was even knighted in 1942 for his contributions to the war effort during WWII.
